Matthew has trialled at Southampton before gaining a scholarship at Swansea City. Last season Matthew captained the Swansea City Youth team to their Welsh Cup Victory. After being released by Swansea, Whatley aged 18, attracted interest from Cardiff. After impressing in training, he featured in an under 21 match at Exeter last April for the Bluebirds and produced a soild peformance.
Whatley has also been called up for Wales in the Tri Nations in Dublin and has represented the Welsh Schools under 18's against New Zealand, Scotland, Ireland & England.
During his scholarship with Swansea City Matthew played 15 games for the Swansea City 1st Reserves and his move to Neath will see him reunited with former teammates Lee Trundle and Matty Collins.
